Volleyball Edged by New Haven 3-2 in Conference Championship

PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The New Haven Chargers edged the
Merrimack volleyball team 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Championship
Saturday night. The Warriors, currently ranked fifth in the East
Region, will see where they will be ranked in the NCAA Tournament
Sunday night on NCAA.com.
Game scores were 18-25, 25-13, 19-25, 25-23, and 15-10.
Merrimack actually led two games to one and 19-18 in the fourth,
but New Haven took advantage of eight Warrior attack errors and
scored six of the next 11 points to forced a fifth set.
In the fifth, Rhe-Ann Niles notched four of her game-high 24 kills
as the Chargers used an 8-1 run to build a 12-6 lead. Kills from
Megan Murray (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) and
Ale Kuncaitis (Canton, MA) cut the lead to 13-10,
but the Chargers escaped after two Warrior attack errors with the
match and the championship.
Molly Cindric (Westland Village, CA) (14 kills,
14 digs), Elyse Lorenz (Frankfort, IL) (43
assists, 13 digs) and Kuncaitis (19 digs, 10 kills) each tallied
double-doubles, while Murray had 12 kills and two blocks.
Alyssa Pickert (Tinley Park, IL) and Heidi
Wroblicky (Irvine, CA) had 26 and 11 digs respectively.
Lisa Barr (Alberta, Canada) had 12 kills. Merrimack hit just .144
as a team and under .081 in three of five games, including -.033 in
the fifth.
The Chargers controlled the net, getting 16 blocks to just four
for Merrimack. Miles was in on 10 of them.
The Warriors, who finished second in the 2008 regular season and
the 2007 conference championship, and who earned their 20th win
earlier Saturday for the first time in school history, will await
their seeding in what should be the team’s second straight
NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
