Womens Soccer Falls to Bridgeport 1-0 in NCAA Tournament

BROOKVILLE, NY – The Merrimack women’s soccer team
saw its season come to an end Friday, losing to Bridgeport
University 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament hosted by
C.W. Post.
With the win, Bridgeport, seeded fourth in the east region,
advances to the second round where they will meet top seed C.W.
Post on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Warriors conclude their season with a 12-5-2 record, including
a 10-3-1 conference record which placed them third in the
Northeast-10.
Katie Stanley scored with 17 seconds remaining in the first half,
taking a feed from Sofia Hoflin for the game’s lone goal. It
was Stanley’s fifth of the season.
Appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in eight
years and ninth overall, Merrimack fired 12 shots but managed to
get just three on goal. Playing in her final collegiate game,
senior goalkeeper Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, NJ)
stopped six shots.
Gabrielle Gramprey (Brockton, MA) posted a team-best four shots
but managed to get just one on goal.
Friday was also the final match for co-captains Jennifer
Conway (Douglas, MA), Catie Hall (Westminster, MA) and
Nikki Abruzzese (Morris Plains, NJ).
The 2008 Warriors featured six all-conference selections,
including two first-team honorees, as well the Northeast-10 Coach
of the Year Gabe Mejail. In addition, Conway and
Gramprey earned all-region honors by Daktronics while Hall was a
CoSIDA Academic All-American. The Warriors were ranked nationally
for four weeks as they rattled off seven straight wins midway
through the season, allowing just two goals during the unbeaten
streak.
