Women’s Soccer Takes on Bridgeport in NCAA First Round Friday

BROOKVILLE, NY – The Merrimack’s women’s soccer team heads to C.W. Post on Friday for an NCAA tournament first round matchup with Bridgeport at 1 p.m.

This marks the ninth NCAA appearance in Merrimack history and the seventh in the last eight years. Last season, the Warriors drew a four seed in the East Region, while this year’s team will be the fifth seed despite an almost identical record. Merrimack is joined in the NCAA tournament by fellow Northeast-10 schools Franklin Pierce and Saint Rose.

The Warriors are led by two first team NE-10 selections and all-region honorees, Gabrielle Gramprey (Brockton, MA) and Jennifer Conway (Douglas, MA). Gramprey leads the Warriors in scoring with 13 goals and 34 points, while midfielder Jackie Vickers (Norwell, MA) has chipped in with three goals and seven assists for 13 points. From September 27 to October 21, Merrimack won seven straight games, outscoring its opponents 18-2. Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, NJ), a second-team all-conference honoree, has started all 18 matches in goal, posting a 1.05 goals-against, a .808 save percentage, and seven shutouts.

Bridgeport heads into the matchup with an overall record of 16-4-1, including an impressive 7-1-1 mark at home. The Purple Knights recorded three separate winning streaks of at least four games, and ended the season with an 11-3 run. They are led by Linda Velaj and Sofia Hoflin, who have 16 and 14 goals respectively.

Bridgeport and Merrimack have met six times in the past with the Warriors posting a 6-0-0 advantage. The last time the two teams faced each other was in 1995. If Merrimack defeats the Purple Knights, they will take on C.W. Post on Sunday in the second round at 1 p.m.

The Warriors have yet to face C.W. Post this season, but Bridgeport split its season series with C.W. Post at one win apiece.
