Anderson's Hat Trick Propels Warriors to 11-0 Win over Bloomfield
COLCHESTER, VT - Saint Michael's College and Merrimack College remained undefeated with shutout victories on Sunday at the DoubleTree Kick Off Classic on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex. In the opener, Merrimack rolled to an 11-0 victory versus Bloomfield College, and in game two, the Purple Knights posted their second shutout win in as many days, blanking Molloy College, 2-0, to win the tournament title.
In game two, Saint Michael's (2-0) scored once in each half to remain perfect on the season. Freshman Carissa Gildea (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) tallied the game-winning goal with 32 seconds left in the first half, and assisted on a second-half goal by junior Kelley Ruch (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union). Senior Laura Wesley (Chula Vista, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) assisted on Gildea's score, and classmate Molly Cole (Dover, N.H./Dover) stopped three shots to earn the shutout in net.
For Molloy (0-1-1), junior Christina Aquilon (Queens, N.Y.) recorded three saves. Both teams finished with eight shots in the contest, but the Purple Knights held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In game one, Merrimack (1-0-1) scored all of its goals in the first half to earn its first victory of the season. Senior Julie Anderson (Middletown, R.I.) led the offense with three goals and an assist, all in the first 16 minutes of play. Junior Catie Hall (Westminster, Mass.) and sophomore Jackie Vickers (Norwell, Mass.) each added a pair of goals, while three players tallied two assists apiece. In goal, senior Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, N.J.) and freshman Liz Matts (Guilford, Mass.) each played one half in net without facing a shot.
For Bloomfield (0-2), sophomore Danielle Blumberg (Bayville, N.J.) stopped 12 shots. Bloomfield was outshot 34-0 in the contest, including 32-0 in the first half.
In All-Tournament honors, Saint Michael's senior Kelley Boyden (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) earned Most Valuable Player, while Gildea and Ruch were also recognized. For Merrimack, Anderson and freshman Lindsey DeMont (Littleton, Mass.) received honors, while juniors Kelly LaClair (Lindenhurst) and Joanna Taylor (Seaford, N.Y.) were Molloy's honorees, and Bloomfield senior Michelle Giuca (North Bergen, N.J.) rounded out the squad.
The Warriors open the home portion of the 2007 season Wednesday night when they host Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
