Women's Basketball Visits Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence

LAWRENCE, MA – Gearing up for the 2009-10 basketball season, the Merrimack women’s basketball Warriors put on a clinic at the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence on September 24 for a group of nearly 50 kids from the ages of nine to twelve years old.

In addition to lending a helping hand with the game of basketball, Merrimack players and coaches spoke with the children about the benefits of working hard and staying focused in life and in the classroom.

Head Coach Helen Williams, for one, found this experience to be beneficial on a number of levels.

“This was not only a great opportunity for us to do something positive for the community as a team, but to show young people in the area how determination and hard work can pay off,” Williams said.

Lawrence-native, junior Tiffany Colon gave a particularly poignant speech to kids from her hometown, sharing with them how she came to be a student-athlete at Merrimack College.

“Tiffany did an amazing job of speaking,” Williams said. “I believe it was important for the children of Lawrence to see someone from their neighborhood that has used basketball along with commitment and dedication as a tool to succeed in life.”

Hoping to encourage team-building, Coach Williams also believed the clinic was helpful to her players in reminding them of the opportunities they have been afforded as a college student-athlete.

“I really believe working with the Boys and Girls Club allows our team to recognize how fortunate they are to be student-athletes at Merrimack College, but also the impact they can have in the community,” Williams said of the clinic. “I think being active in the community like this is instrumental in bonding our players and prepares us for the upcoming season.”

To begin the 2009-10 basketball schedule, the Warriors take to the road on Sunday, November 15 at Dowling College of the East Coast Conference in Oakdale, New York at 4:00pm before the conference home-opener against Bentley University on November 18 in North Andover.
