Womens Basketball Edged by Pace 70-64 in NE-10 Tournament

PLEASANTVILLE, NJ – Behind 30 points from the Northeast-10
Freshman of the Year Brittany Shields, the Pace women’s
basketball team overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat the Warriors
70-64 Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Northeast-10
Tournament.
The Warriors, ranked 12th in the Northeast-10 Tournament, finish
the season 9-19 overall. Pace (18-10), ranked fifth in the
tournament, advances to the quarterfinals where they will face
fourth-ranked American International.
Five Warriors scored in double-figures led by 13 points from
Genn Roy (Gransby, MA) while Hannah
DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, NC) posted a double-double on 11
points and 10 rebounds. In her final collegiate game, the
Northeast-10 All-Conference second team selection Amanda
Shannon (North Andover, MA) scored 11 points and dished
out four assists.
Merrimack came out strong, seizing a 10-point first half lead at
40-30 after Shannon hit a jumper with 1:30 to play in the half that
capped a 14-7 run by the Warriors. They took a 41-33 lead into the
locker room at halftime, but the Setters did not quit as they
scored 10 of the first 11 points in the second half, capped off
with a lay-up from Shiesha McCollum, who was fouled and converted
the free throw to tie the game at 43.
Pace never trailed again after Shields hit a lay-up with 11:21 to
play in the game to give her team the 46-45 lead.
They extended the lead to eight at 61-53 after a pair of free
throws by Shields, but the Warriors, with their backs to the wall,
answered right back as Casey Miller (Fairbanks,
AK) and Sara Benischek (Shrub Oak, NY)
hit back-to-back threes, cutting Pace’s lead to two at 61-59
with 2:32 to play. After a free throw from Roy with 34 seconds
left, the lead was just one, but Taylor Losey, Kristin Connolly,
and Shields all hit their free throws in the waning moments,
sealing the win for Pace.
Down two with 20 seconds left, the Warriors had their shot to take
the lead, but Shannon missed a three and the Setters grabbed the
rebound to seal the win.
Shields finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds, as the Setters
tallied 44 points in the paint to just 18 for Merrimack. The
Warriors shot just 29% from the field in the second half and made
just two threes. Miller finished with 11 points, while
Tiffany Colon (Lawrence, MA) added 12 off the
bench to go with seven boards.
