Lowell Rallies for 81-69 Win over Womens Basketball
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack women’s basketball
team led by 14 at halftime but Lowell used a 27-8 run for the 81-69
come-from-behind victory at the Volpe Gym Saturday.
Merrimack (7-15, 6-11 NE-10) remains in 12th place after the loss,
but its lead on the 13th place River Hawks is down to just one
game. The top-12 teams make the Northeast-10 Tournament at the end
of the regular season.
The Warriors led by 14 at the half, but the River Hawks used a
27-8 run to take a 53-48 lead with 9:13 to play in the game. The
Warriors responded with seven straight points capped with a jumper
from Gennifer Roy (Granby, MA) to retake the lead
at 55-53.
But the River Hawks kept pressing, grabbing a 68-62 lead with 2:12
to go after a lay-in from Jen Valente. Lowell controlled the paint,
especially on the offensive end in the second half, scoring 28
points in the paint in the final 20 minutes. They put the game away
with a 9-0 run in the final two minutes.
Merrimack trailed 11-4 early but used an 11-0 run capped off with
a lay-in from Roy assisted by Hannah DeGraffinreed
(Raleigh, NC) to take an 15-11 lead. DeGraffinreed
registered six points and five boards in the first eight
minutes.
The Warriors closed the half with a 15-3 run and took a 40-26 lead
into the locker room at halftime. Amanda Shannon (North
Andover, MA) hit three late three-pointers and finished
with 13 first-half points and four assists, while Roy also hit
three from behind the arc and tallied 11 points. The Warriors hit
eight threes in the first half and shot 42.4% overall from the
field.
Shannon led the Warriors with 28 points and five assists as the
senior scored 15 of Merrimack’s 29 second-half points. Roy
finished with 13 points, scoring in double figures for the fourth
straight game. DeGraffinreed tallied a double-double on 10 points
and 13 rebounds, while Tiffany Colon (Lawrence,
MA) added eight points off the bench.
Megan Berry was one of three River Hawks in double figures as she
tallied 16 points. Antonnea Robinson scored 14 while Rahshala
Valentine added 13 and six boards. The visitors shot 56.7% in the
second half and converted on 18 second-half free throws in 22
attempts.
Merrimack hosts #24 Franklin Pierce on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the
Volpe Gym.
