MANCHESTER, NH – Despite 22 points from Casey Miller (Fairbanks, AK), the Merrimack women’s basketball team saw its four-game road winning streak snapped by Southern New Hampshire 66-62 Wednesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse.

Merrimack trailed 13-9 early but used an 8-0 run to grab a 17-13 lead midway through the first half. Continuing her hot shooting of late, Miller scored four of her team’s eight during the run and tallied nine of Merrimack’s first 19 points. The Penmen would rally to take the 26-24 lead with 1:29 remaining in the first half behind a three from Stephanie Houghton. Houghton scored 12 in the first half as Southern New Hampshire took a 27-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Miller led the Warriors with 11 points, while Amanda Shannon (North Andover, MA) added five. Merrimack shot 26% in the first half but received 10 first half rebounds from Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh, NC).

The Penmen continued their offensive burst to start the second, using a 14-5 run capped off with a jumper from Houghton to pull ahead 41-29 4:40 into the second half. The visitors cut the lead to eight at 50-42, but despite spending the final 10 minutes in the bonus, the Penmen pulled away as Ashara Carrington made two baskets and Julia Houghtaling added another to increase the Penmen lead to 14 with 6:37 remaining.

Trailing 60-51 with four minutes remaining, the Warriors crept back into the game, scoring eight straight to cut the lead to three with Shannon getting seven of them, including a three that made the score 60-57. But Houghton responded following a time out with a three of her own ending any chance of a Merrimack comeback.

Miller’s 22 points, which was one short of her career high, marked the fifth straight game she has reached double figures while coming off the bench. Shannon added 17 while DeGraffinreed finished with a career-high 16 rebounds to go with eight points and five assists. Gennifer Roy (Granby, MA) added 10 and was 5-for-6 from the foul line. Merrimack tallied 16 offensive rebounds to just eight for Southern New Hampshire. But the Warriors struggled from the field, shooting just 31% overall and made just six threes on 22 attempts.

Houghton led the hosts with 16 points, while Houghtaling added 16 points and nine boards. Southern New Hampshire shot 46% overall and 45% from behind the arc.

Merrimack (7-14, 6-10 NE-10) hosts UMass Lowell on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Warriors defeated Lowell 68-55 on January 29 behind 19 points from Miller and 15 rebounds from DeGraffinreed.
