Shannon Reaches 1,000 Points in 78-63 Loss to #8 Stonehill

EASTON, MA – Senior captain Amanda Shannon (North
Andover, MA) became the 16th player in school history to
reach 1,000 points as the Warriors dropped a closely-contested
battle with eighth-ranked Stonehill 78-63 Wednesday night at
Merkert Gym.
With 11:16 remaining in the second half and Merrimack trailing
54-50, Shannon, who entered Wednesday’s game second in the
Northeast-10 in scoring averaging 20.4 points per game, drained two
free throws, with the first marking her 1,000th career point.
Merrimack fought tough with the Skyhawks, who were picked second in
the Northeast-10 preseason poll. They trailed 66-63 with less than
six minutes remaining in regulation, but Stonehill used a 12-0 run
to end the game, capped off with threes from Megan Methven and
Emily Rousseau. Merrimack did not score in the final 5:57 after a
jump shot from Tiffany Colon (Lawrence, MA).
The Warriors led 35-34 at halftime but the Skyhawks used a 13-3 run
to start the second half to take a 47-38 advantage.
Shannon finished with a game-high 22 points while Casey
Miller (Fairbanks, AK) added 15, including three
three-point baskets and dished out five assists. Gennifer
Roy (Granby, MA) chipped in with a career-high 15 points
on 5-of-9 shooting. Hannah DeGraffinreed (Raleigh,
NC) reached double-digits in rebounds with ten for the
fourth time this season.
Bethany Tighe, Methven, and Rousseau each scored 17 points for
Stonehill who had five players in double figures. The Skyhawks
capitalized on their 15 offensive rebounds netting 11 points off
second opportunities.
Merrimack (1-5, 0-3 NE-10) visits AIC Saturday for a 1:30 p.m.
game.
