Womens Hoops Take on Assumption Wednesday in Home Opener

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack women’s basketball
team will take on Assumption College Wednesday night in the 2008-09
home and conference opener at the Volpe Gym.
The women’s basketball team opened the season with a 58-46
loss to Adelphi University in non-conference action on Saturday.
Senior captain Amanda Shannon tallied a game-high
14 points in 38 minutes, while forward Hannah
DeGraffinreed, in her Merrimack debut, posted a
double-double on 13 points (five-of-seven shooting) and 11
rebounds. The Warriors shot just 28.6% percent from the field in
the first half but went to the locker room trailing by just four,
at 27-23, at halftime.
The Greyhounds are 2-0 after victories over Shepherd and
Bloomfield at the Stonehill College Mixer last weekend. Assumption
also defeated Holy Cross (Div. I) in an exhibition game. Kayla
Parker leads the Greyhounds, averaging 15 points-per-game and 5.5
rebounds.
Following Wednesday’s game, Merrimack will host the
Courtyard by Marriott Classic this weekend and will take on Dowling
College in the opening game on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with Bellarmine
and Flagler playing in the first game at 5:30 p.m. The winners will
battle in the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m., with the
consolation game preceding it at 1 p.m.
The Warriors close out the pre-Thanksgiving schedule against
Southern New Hampshire on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Volpe Gym.
