Women’s Basketball Loses Season Opener to Adelphi Saturday

GARDEN CITY, NY – The Merrimack women’s basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a 58-46 loss to Adelphi University Saturday afternoon.

Senior captain Amanda Shannon tallied a game-high 14 points in 38 minutes, while forward Hannah DeGraffinreed, in her Merrimack debut, posted a double-double on 13 points (five-of-seven shooting) and 11 rebounds.

The Warriors shot just 28.6% percent from the field in the first half but went to the locker room trailing by just four, at 27-23, at halftime.

But the Panthers tallied 23 points off turnovers to just four for the Warriors, to pull away late for the 12-point victory. Adelphi added 19 second-chance points, getting 24 offensive rebounds, led by 10 from Serita Lee. Lee finished with 14 points and 17 total rebounds off the bench in just 19 minutes.

Casey Miller chipped in with nine points, while Tiffany Colon added four points and eight boards, including five on the offensive glass.

The Warriors (0-1) open the conference schedule at home Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Assumption College.
