SYRACUSE, NY – After defeating Southern New Hampshire 1-0
in the Northeast-10 first round Wednesday, the Merrimack softball
team battles Le Moyne Saturday at 9 a.m. in game one of the double
elimination Northeast-10 tournament.
The Warriors are the fourth seed in the tournament, with Le Moyne,
the Northeast-10 regular season champion, the top seed. If
Merrimack defeats Le Moyne, they will play at 3 p.m. on Saturday
against the winner of #2 New Haven and #3 Southern Connecticut. If
the Warriors lose, they play the loser of UNH and SCSU at 1 p.m. in
an elimination game.
The tournament concludes on Sunday.
Senior Jill Gagnon not only threw her second straight no hitter on Wednesday in Merrimack's first round 1-0 win against Southern New Hampshire, but she scored the game-winning run after pinch hitter Casey Conetta lined a two-out single to left.
Gagnon did not allow a hit in seven innings, striking out ten Penmen. She picked up her 13th win of the season and second straight no-hitter with the shutout. Southern New Hampshire pitcher Kelsey Griffin fought a hard battle as well, allowing only three hits from the Warriors, while striking out five.
The Warriors are 2-4 against the three teams remaining in the tournament.
Not ranked in the top-10 in the region, Merrimack needs to win
the Northeast-10 Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
