Mens Soccer Falls in Penalty Kicks to Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, NY – The Merrimack men’s soccer team was
eliminated in penalty kicks by fourth-ranked Le Moyne Sunday
afternoon in the Northeast-10 Quarterfinals.
With the score tied at two after overtime, the Dolphins defeated
Merrimack 4-3 in penalty kicks.
The Warriors were down 2-0 after two rounds of penalty kicks and
could not recover even after Rob Pedra stopped the
Dolphins’ third shooter. Wayne Sygrove, Greg
Motta, and Maxime Obongono each scored in
penalty kicks, but Le Moyne’s Jesse Carr scored on the final
kick to give the Dolphins the win.
With the win, the Dolphins advance to the Northeast-10 Semifinals
on Wednesday against the winner of top-ranked UMass Lowell and
eighth-seed Bentley University.
Sygrove gave the Warriors the early lead as he scored in the
seventh minute. After Le Moyne tied the game 11 minutes later,
Eric Gomes regained the lead for the visitors in
the 47th minute, scoring off a Sygrove free kick.
Brice Rudat tied the score with 15 minutes remaining in
regulation.
Pedra stopped five shots in goal, including one in the second
overtime.
Today’s match marked the second straight year the two squads
have played at Le Moyne in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Merrimack scored just over two minutes into the second overtime
period last season to record a 2-1 victory.
