Mens Soccer Falls to Franklin Pierce 2-1 on Senior Day

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack men’s soccer team,
ranked eighth in the east region, lost to the defending National
Champion Franklin Pierce 2-1 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at
Warrior Field.
Merrimack got on the board first, as Greg Motta
headed in a Wayne Sygrove corner kick for his
third of the season just eight minutes into the game.
But the Ravens fought back, as Viktor Goncalves netted his 10th of
the season as he took a Sean Ahern feed and beat Rob
Pedra at 29:16. Eight minutes into the second half,
Goncalves emerged from a scramble in front and beat Pedra near side
for his second of the game.
This match was a highly-contested battle, featuring six yellow
cards, including five in the second half.
Motta led the way with three shots for the Warriors. Franklin
Pierce outshot Merrimack 14-to-6, with Pedra making four saves.
Before the game, Merrimack honored its six seniors, Rob
Pedra, Tiago Dalboni, Matt Sanderson, Wayne Sygrove, Eric
Gomes, and Martin Gabadian as part of
Senior Day.
The Warriors (9-4-3, 6-4-2 NE-10) close the regular season at
Stonehill on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before opening conference
tournament play in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
