Andrew Braithwaite Named to Academic All-Star Team; Nine Others Named to Team
WAKEFIELD, MA. – Goaltender Andrew Braithwaite (Kingston,
Ontario) rounded out a stellar sophomore season by being named to
the Hockey East Academic All-Star Team. Braithwaite, last
season’s Co-Top Scholar Athlete in Hockey East, posted a 3.97
GPA in 2007-08, while starting in the final 16 games and posting a
goals-against and save percentage that ranked second in Hockey
East.
Braithwaite was honored as Merrimack’s Male Scholar Athlete
of the Year and was a three-time recipient of the Hockey East
Defensive Player of the Week honors in the 2007-08 season.
Joining Braithwaite on the Hockey East All-Academic Team are nine
of his teammates, including Grant Farrell (Calgary, Alberta),
captain Derek Pallardy (Chesterfield, MO), and J.C. Robitaille (Des
Ruisseaux, Quebec), all who were named to the team for the second
time.
Also on the team is John Goebel (Parma, OH) and five freshmen,
Kurtis Astle (Port Coquitlam, B.C.), Joe Cucci (Melrose Park, IL),
John Jamieson (Billerica, MA), Matt Moulakelis (Hawthorne Woods,
IL), and Francois Ouimet (Lorraine, Quebec).
Three athletes, UMass Lowell’s Frank Stegnar, Maine’s
Chris Hahn, and UNH’s Brad Flaishans were named Co-Top
Scholar Athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Joining these three and
Braithwaite on the Academic All-Star Team are UMass’ Patrick
Dineen and Maine’s Tanner House.
Maine had 16 student-athletes named to the team, with UMass Lowell
(13), UMass (12), Merrimack (10) and Vermont (10) also finishing in
the top-half in the conference.
