Mens Basketball Rolls to 87-61 Win over SCSU

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack men’s basketball
team won its fourth straight game Saturday, defeating Southern
Connecticut 87-61 at the Volpe Gym.
Merrimack (19-7, 15-6 NE-10) hosts New Haven Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
in the regular season finale. The Warriors will honor the class of
2009 before the game as part of Senior Day.
Today's win, coupled with an Assumption loss and a Stonehill
win, puts the Warriors in a two-way tie for third place with the
Skyhawks. A Warrior win Tuesday guarantees a first-round bye in the
Northeast-10 Tournament.
Today’s win gives Merrimack 15 conference wins, marking the
first time in school history the Warriors have won 15 games in the
Northeast-10.
The Warriors put the game away early scoring 14 of the first 16
points and 29 of the first 40 in the first ten minutes of the game.
Wayne Mack (Paterson, NJ) tallied seven of his
team’s first eight points, while Darren Duncan
(Briarwood, NY) tallied eight first-half assists. Mack led
all scorers with 11 in the first half, while Roland Davis
(Deer Park, NY) added nine. All nine Warriors that played
in the first half scored, as the hosts shot 52.9% from the field
while forcing 13 Owl turnovers.
Merrimack cruised in the second half, emptying its bench as all 13
players in uniform scored, including Wilfredo Pagan
(Lawrence, MA) who scored four points and added a steal in
the final eight minutes.
Duncan finished with his second-straight double-double on 13
points and 11 assists in just 28 minutes. Mack led all scorers with
15 points and added four steals and four assists. Davis finished
with 11, including three baskets from behind the arc, while
Craig Woehnker (Colts Neck, NJ) scored 13 off the
bench.
The Warriors allowed just one three-pointer and forced 26 Owls
turnovers.
Kieran Ramsey led Southern Connecticut with 22 points and 11
rebounds. Terron Jones also tallied a double-double on 11 points
and 12 rebounds.
