Darren Duncan Named a Finalist for the Bob Cousy Award

NORTH ANDOVER, MA. – Junior captain Darren Duncan
(Briarwood, NY) has been named a finalist for the
prestigious Bob Cousy Award given to the top collegiate male
basketball point guard in the country.
Duncan is one of 16 finalists, and one of two players from
Division II, to be named as a finalist. Twelve of the 16 finalists
are from Division I while two each are from Division II and
III.
The Bob Cousy Award presented by The Hartford is given to the top
collegiate male basketball point guard annually spanning across all
divisions within the game by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall
of Fame. The selection criteria emphasize leadership, team work,
success, and fundamentals as being critical parts for the game of
basketball as a point guard. The 2009 Finalists were selected by
screening committees comprised of media members representing all
three divisions of collegiate basketball.
Duncan leads the Northeast-10 in scoring with 20.1 points per game
and assists with 7.3 per game. He leads the conference in free
throws attempted and made and is on pace to set the school record
for free throws attempted and made in a season and in a career. The
junior captain reached the 1,000 point milestone on November 24. He
ranks third nationally in assists per game and 25th nationally in
scoring.
Led by Duncan, the Warriors have posted a 15-6 overall record,
11-5 in the Northeast-10 and are currently fifth in the conference,
just two games out of first place. Merrimack is ranked fifth in the
NCAA Division II Regional Rankings as of Wednesday. After making
the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2000, the
Warriors have a second straight NCAA berth in their sights.
Duncan was one of nine point guards from the Division II level to
be nominated at the start of the season and was the lone member
from the Northeast-10 Conference and the East Region. Joining
Duncan on the final ballot from Division II is Virgil Buensuceso of
BYU Hawaii.
A premier Selection Committee will be appointed by the Hall of
Fame to review the list of candidates. The Selection Committee will
be comprised of up to 30 members representing the following
constituent groups: Hall of Famers, Head Coaches from each NCAA
Division, Sports Information Directors and the Media.
Previous winners of the award include D.J. Augustin (2008) of the
University of Texas, Acie Law IV (2007) of Texas A&M, Dee Brown
of Illinois (2006), Raymond Felton from the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill (2005) and Jameer Nelson from St.
Joseph’s University (2004).
