Men’s Basketball Rebounds with 90-62 Win over Pace

NORTH ANDOVER, MA. – The Merrimack men’s basketball team bounced back Sunday with a 90-62 victory over Pace University to move back into second place in the Northeast-10.

Dee Mency (Hagerstown, MD) scored 14 points to go with career highs of 14 rebounds and six assists, while Aaron Strothers (Wareham, MA) tallied a career best 16 points off the bench in the win.

The Warriors led the entire way, grabbing a 20-7 early lead as Craig Woehnker (Colts Neck, NJ) hit two straight three-pointers highlighting a 12-0 early run for the hosts. Pace hit just three of its first 17 field goals and trailed 40-25 at halftime after Roland Davis (Deer Park, NY) hit a three from the corner with five seconds left in the first half. Mency grabbed 10 first-half rebounds to go with nine points, three assists, and two steals, while Darren Duncan (Briarwood, NY) was sharp offensively, scoring 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting and was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Pace cut the lead to 16 at 68-52 midway through the second, but the Warriors used a 16-5 run, capped off with a three from Davis to put the game away.

Merrimack got 37 points from its bench, including 13 from Woehnker and eight from Davis and outscored the Setters 14-4 in transition. Duncan finished with a team-high 20 points and eight assists, while Strothers and Woehnker had six boards each. Davis tallied a career-best five assists. Wayne Mack (Paterson, NJ) scored eight points and had six boards, four assists and two steals. The Warriors outrebounded the visitors 49-35 in the game.

Ryan Woods led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting in the losing cause for Pace (6-12, 4-9 NE-10). The Setters shot just 27% in the first half from the field and 15% for the game from behind the arc.

Sunday’s game concluded a stretch of nine games in 19 days in which the Warriors went 6-3, including 3-0 on the road.

Merrimack (15-4, 11-3 NE-10) is idle until Saturday when they head to Waltham to battle rival Bentley University at 3:30 p.m.
