Mens Basketball Improves to 11-2 with 71-58 Win over Saint Michaels

COLCHESTER, VT – Darin Mency tallied a team-high 19 points as four Warriors were in double figures in the 71-58 win over Saint Michael’s College Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Warriors remain in a tie for first place with
Stonehill. Saint Anselm, who was also tied with Merrimack and
Stonehill, lost to Bentley Saturday dropping them into a tie for
second. The Warriors face the Hawks on Wednesday in Manchester.
After the long bus ride up to Colchester Saturday morning, the
visitors started slowly as Saint Michael’s jumped to an early
19-13 lead. But the Warriors closed the first half with an 18-8 run
in the final 6:45 to take an eight-point halftime lead, 37-29 over
the Purple Knights.
The Warriors limited the Purple Knights to just 29 points again in
the second half as Saint Michael’s made just one of six
attempted three-pointers in the final 20 minutes. A three-pointer
from David Kennedy with 9:54 remaining gave
Merrimack its first double-digit lead of the game at 53-41.
Roland Davis followed with a three of his own to
push the lead to 14; a lead which never crept below 11 for the
remainder of the game.
Darren Duncan tallied 14 points and seven assists
in just 27 minutes, while Wayne Mack added 14 of
his own on 5-of-10 shooting. Davis scored 10 off the bench as
Merrimack’s bench outscored Saint Michael’s bench
17-8.
Qua’ron Pinckey tallied a game-high 21 on 8-of-12 shooting
but committed eight turnovers. Nate Birr and Jon Zylstra added 11
each, while Tyler Schilling grabbed 14 boards in the losing
effort.
The Warriors were outrebounded 33-20, but they forced 22 turnovers
scoring 21 points off the Purple Knight mistakes.
Merrimack (11-2, 7-2 NE-10) hosts American International College
Monday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game at the Volpe Gym.
