NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Junior captain Darren Duncan (Briarwood, NY) became the 35th player in men’s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points as the Merrimack men’s basketball team improved to 5-0 with a 89-71 win over Southern New Hampshire Monday night at the Volpe Gym.

Playing against a Penmen team that ended Bentley’s 55-game Northeast-10 winning streak and 63-game regional opposition unbeaten streak on Saturday, Merrimack came out flying and led the entire way, leaving little chance for the Penmen’s third straight victory.

With 5:50 remaining in the game and the Warriors leading 67-57, Duncan drained one of his ten free throws for his 1,000th career point. He finished with a game-high 20 points and added a career-high 13 assists.

Duncan took any wind out of the sails of a Penmen comeback as he followed up his 1,000th point with an electric dunk with 3:20 remaining, extending the lead to 14 while sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The Warriors emptied their bench in the final minutes as freshmen Juan Carlos Rosich (San Jose, Costa Rica) and Wilfredo Pagan (Lawrence, MA) added points in the final moments.

Merrimack jumped to a 24-10 lead behind three three-pointers from David Kennedy (East Northport, NY) and four first-half blocks from Jared Brownlee (Portland, ME). The Warriors managed to tally 28 first-half points before either Duncan or Darin Mency (Hagerstown, MD) found the basket. Merrimack shot 57% from the field while the Penmen were zero-for-eight from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.

Southern New Hampshire finished two-for-19 from three-point range, while the Warriors drained 11 threes on 25 attempts.

Mency tallied 14 points and five boards, while Kennedy added 13 points and seven boards. Roland Davis (Deer Park, NY) came off the bench to score 14 while Brownlee finished eight points, six blocks and six rebounds.

The Warriors (5-0, 3-0 NE-10) visit Stonehill on December 3 at 7:30 p.m. They do not return home until January 6 against Bentley at 7:30 p.m.
