Freshman Wayne Mack scores 20, Merrimack runs past Mercy in the second half.

LOWELL -- Merrimack College used an 18-4 run to start the second
half, breaking open a close game and running away with an 81-65 win
over St. Thomas Aquinas, in the first round of the UMass Lowell
tourney, at the Costello gym.
Freshman Wayne Mack inaugurated his Merrimack
career with a 20 point night, which came on the strength of four
3-point shots. Junior captain Darren Duncan added
16 points and sophomore Dee Mency added 13. With
senior Chris Winters and freshman Roland
Davis each scoring 10, Merrimack put five players in
double figures.
The Warriors struggled early and trailed 11-4 before going on an
19-11 run to take the lead when Mency knocked down a 3-pointer,
giving Merrimack its first lead (23-22). The Warriors took a 42-38
lead into the locker room but shot just 39 percent (14 for 36) in
the opening 20 minutes. St. Thomas shot 55 percent in the opening
half but only hit one long range shot while Merrimack buried
five.
Duncan had 10 assists and Winters led all rebounders with
nine.
Merrimack returns to action on Sunday and will meet Mercy College
in game two of the UMass Lowell tourney, starting at 6 p.m. In
Saturday's first game, UMass Lowell defeated Mercy, 71-48.
