Mens Basketball Cruises to 72-60 Win over Southern Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, CT. – The Merrimack men’s basketball team
improved to 9-1 away from North Andover with a 72-60 win over
Southern Connecticut State Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors remain tied for first place with Stonehill in the
Northeast-10. The two teams will meet next Saturday at 3 p.m. at
the Volpe Gym.
Led by nine early points from Roland Davis (Deer Park,
NY), the visitors jumped out to an early 23-15 lead. After
the Owls cut the lead to two at 24-22, Merrimack exploded for 15
straight points, capped off with a dunk from Jared Brownlee
(Portland, ME) and a lay-in from Wayne Mack
(Paterson, NJ), to close the first half.
Chris Winters (East Lyme, CT) and David
Kennedy (East Northport, NY) each converted two-pointers
to start the second half, extending the lead to 43-22 after 19
straight points from the visitors dating back to the end of the
first half. The Warriors cruised from there, extending the lead to
as much as 21 at 62-41 after a three from Kennedy with 6:18 to
play.
Three Warriors were in double figures, led by 14 each from Kennedy
and Darin Mency (Hagerstown, MD). Davis finished
with 12 off the bench, tallying all of his points off
three-pointers. Darren Duncan (Briarwood, NY)
scored nine points in just 29 minutes, as the junior captain took
advantage of Merrimack’s big lead to get some much needed
rest with the Warriors in the midst of nine games in 19 days.
Merrimack finished 8-for-17 from behind the arc, with Davis
draining half of his team’s threes.
Derrick Corbett led all scorers with 20 points, while Justin
Gardenhire added 15 for the Owls in the losing effort. Southern
Connecticut shot just 20% from three-point range on 3-for-15
shooting and committed 17 turnovers.
Merrimack (13-3, 9-2 NE-10) returns home for three games in six
days beginning with a matchup against the College of Saint Rose on
Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
