Daugherty Dubbed Northeast-10 Player of the Week

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Helping the Merrimack field hockey
Warriors (8-5, 3-1 NE-10) to a 2-1 record over the week and the
team’s best home record in program history through the month
of September (5-1), freshman April Daugherty (Lincoln,
RI) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player and
Freshman of the Week on Monday.
After a tough, 2-1 loss to #5 UMass-Lowell, Daugherty rallied the
Warriors to a pair of 5-3 wins over Southern Connecticut and
American International. At home versus Southern Connecticut, the
Communications major tallied the program’s first hat trick
since September 17, 2005 (Cassandra Leone ’06 led Merrimack
to a 5-3 win over Saint Anselm) and only the third hat trick in the
last six years of the program. In addition, Daugherty tallied a
pair of assists versus Southern Connecticut to set the program
record for points in a game (eight) over the past six seasons.
Against American International, Daugherty notched a pair of goals
(including the game-winner) while assisting another to classmate
Jen Otis (Penacook, NH), who is having an equally
impressive first year with 24 points (9G, 6A) and two game-winning
goals for the Warriors.
Head Coach Anne Rounce commented on
Daugherty’s success and attributed that to her nose for the
ball once Merrimack moves into the offensive zone.
“She has an incredible ability to finish once we get into
our offensive set,” Rounce said. “She doesn’t let
the defense dictate what she is going to do; she has a relentless
attitude and she works hard every day and it’s clearly paying
dividends.”
Only two points shy of breaking the program record for points in a
season (34; set by Kristin Belair ’06), Daugherty is tops in
the Northeast-10 Conference for points scored (32) and assists (12)
through 13 games. She is also one of the league’s most
efficient when it comes to offense with a .270-shooting percentage
from the field.
Daugherty looks to anchor a Warriors playoff push with six
conference games to close out the 2009 regular season, starting at
Assumption College on Saturday, October 3 at 4:00pm. Currently in
fourth among Northeast-10 schools, Merrimack remaining opponents
have a combined record of 28-33.
