Title: Head Football Coach
Phone: 978-837-5033

Through three seasons, head coach John Perry has completely rebuilt the Merrimack football program, earning a Northeast-10 Championship in 2009 and paving the way for continued success.

Merrimack led the Northeast-10 in offense and scoring for the third straight season in 2010, while seizing the top-two conference defensive awards. Shawn Loiseau, who was second in the country in tackles per game, earned the Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year Award and was the Greater Boston Gridiron Club’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player becoming the first player in program history to earn both honors. Loiseau’s classmate, Tony Johnson was the NE-10 Defensive Lineman of the Year, leading the conference in sacks and tackles for a loss.

Perry’s up tempo, high-energy offense scored 25 or more points in nine of 10 games in 2010 and totaled 42 or more points in each victory.

Merrimack’s offense set a school record with 241 first downs, quarterbacks James Suozzo and Joe Clancy combined for 3104 passing yards, most in school history.

In all, seven Warriors earned all-conference honors, including first-team selections Loiseau, Johnson, David Bellmont and Greg Abelli.

In 2009, Perry guided the top offense in New England to a 7-3 record, earning a share of the Northeast-10 Championship, the second title in program history. Suozzo was named the Northeast-10 Most Valuable Player, while ten other players were named to All-Conference teams. Perry’s offense was ranked fourth nationally, averaging 482.6 total yards per game while totaling 49 offensive touchdowns.

With underclassmen, all of which were recruited by Perry and his coaching staff, earning plenty of time on the playing field, Merrimack led the Northeast-10 in scoring, rushing, total yards, first downs, and fewest sacks allowed. On the defensive side of the ball, Johnson, who led the conference and set the school record for sacks in a season as a freshman, led the conference in tackles for a loss per game and tied for first in fumbles forced. Loiseau set what was then the school record with 123 tackles, tied for the conference lead and was second in the nation with 12.3 tackles per game. Sophomore Anthony Smalls, who was third in the country in yards per carry and yards per game, became just the second running back in school history to reach 1,000 yards in a season.

The Warriors also set numerous team school records, including the scoring record (349 points), total rushing yards (2,516), total yards (4,826) and first downs (226). For the second straight year, the offensive line set the school record for fewest sacks in a season with 11, four fewer than in 2008.

In his first season, Perry guided the 2009 Warriors to a 6-4 record, 4-3 in the Northeast-10, finishing in third place in the conference. The 2008 Warriors, who were 4-0 on the road against Division II competition, allowed the fewest sacks in the conference, while ranking second in the nation with 4.10 sacks per game. Perry’s offensive-minded style resulted in school records for most rushing yards in a game (358), total offensive yards in a game (647), and first downs in a game (34) against Saint Anselm. Andrew Jackson became the first first-team All-American in school history, while 12 players were named to Northeast-10 All-Conference teams.

Perry, who has over 15 years of college football coaching experience, started at Merrimack on December 28, 2007 after spending the prior season as the associate head coach at the University of New Hampshire, his alma mater.
