Suozzo Honored with Gold Helmet; Watch Coach Perry's Comments from Luncheon

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Sophomore quarterback James Suozzo (Everett, MA) was honored as the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet winner for his play in Merrimack’s 42-21 victory over Stonehill last Friday.

Head Coach John Perry accepted the award Wednesday at a media luncheon on behalf of Suozzo.

Suozzo is the first Merrimack player to earn the Gold Helmet award since Colin Temple in the 2005 season.

Suozzo, also named the Northeast-10 Player of the Week, threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 114 and two scores as Merrimack won its conference opener 42-21 over Stonehill College Friday.

The Everett native, who had 227 total yards in the first quarter alone, is first in total offensive yards in the Northeast-10, averaging 328.3 yards per game. He ranks fourth in average rushing yards, tops among quarterbacks, with 85 yards per game and is third with 243.3 passing yards per game. Suozzo has rushed for six touchdowns, second most in the conference and has thrown for seven more, leading Merrimack to the top rushing offense and second best passing offense in the conference.

After opening the season with three straight home games, Merrimack (2-1, 1-0 NE-10) hits the road for a conference battle with Saint Anselm Saturday at 1 p.m.
