Jim Martin recently completed his first season as head coach of the Merrimack baseball team after taking over the reins in October 2010.
In Martin's first season at the helm, the Warriors posted a 14-28 overall record while going 6-20 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Three student-athletes received Northeast-10 All-Conference nods in 2011. Mark O'Flynn was tabbed to the second team while Mike Dooling and Joe Mantoni were named to the third team.
A Norwood, Mass. native, Martin came to Merrimack from Southern Connecticut State University, where he was entering his fifth season as the assistant baseball coach.
Martin handled a variety of responsibilities for the Owls, including on-field instruction for hitters and fielders while overseeing scouting and recruiting. He also coordinated the program’s marketing, community service, and special team events such as the annual Golf Tournament.
In Martin’s second season at Southern Connecticut in 2008, the Owls posted a 36-19 record, 24-6 in conference, improving by 11 games from 2007 and finishing second in the conference. The team’s grade-point-average has risen to the highest level in recent history, while two Owls were selected in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft for the first time in school history.
Martin also served as an assistant coach for Saint Anselm in 2005-06 before accepting a similar position with Southern Connecticut.
A 2005 graduate from St. John’s with a degree in education, Martin ranked second in the Big East with 79 hits and a .391 average in conference play as a junior. A two-time Big East Academic All-Star, he was an All-Big East conference selection as a senior, starting in 54 games and leading his team to the regular season title and a second-consecutive at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Nick Barese recently completed his first year as an assistant coach with the Merrimack College baseball team. Barese works primarily with the Warriors’ pitching staff.
Barese came to Merrimack after serving in the same capacity at Saint Anselm College. He is a 2008 graduate of Saint Anselm College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.
Barese was a four-year member of both the Hawks’ football and baseball teams. He was elected a captain of each team and was named both programs’ Most Valuable Player once. Barese holds team records for innings pitched, games started, wins, earned run average and strikeouts.
After graduating from Saint Anselm College, Barese went on to play professional baseball in the Italian Baseball League for the Rangers Redipuglia Baseball Club.
During the summers of 2007 and 2008, he competed in the Yawkey Baseball League of Boston. The Yawkey Baseball League is an amateur baseball league comprised of college and former professional players. Barese was named a Yawkey League all-star in 2007.
