Birgid Hopkins is in her 15th year with the Merrimack College
athletics department staff. She began her duties in November of
1994. During the 2005-06 season, she was promoted to the role of
Senior Woman Administrator.
In her present role, Hopkins is responsible for the supervision of
the athletic training room and the sports medicine and athletic
training curriculum. She supervises a sports medicine staff of five
Board of Certification Certified Athletic Trainers and
approximately 30 athletic training students.
During her time at Merrimack, Hopkins has successfully directed
the process for two re-accreditation reviews, first in 2001 and
again in 2006. In 2001, the sports medicine program completed an
extensive review by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied
Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and was seen as in compliance
with the nationally-established standards set forth by the
organization. In 2006, the program once again met compliance
standards, gaining re-certification by the Commission on
Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
As Merrimack’s SWA, Hopkins supervises the Life Skills
Program, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and is part of the
department’s academic mentoring program. She has coordinated
several presentations, including study skills orientation, drug and
alcohol awareness, and other outreach programs.
Prior to her post at Merrimack, Hopkins was the Director of Sports
Medicine at the Orthopedic Rehabilitation Affiliates and Billerica
High School. She also served one year as head athletic trainer at
Fitchburg State, overseeing the health care needs of athletes in 22
varsity sports.
Hopkins received a Bachelor of Science degree from Salem State
College. She earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology
from Florida International. She is a licensed athletic trainer in
Massachusetts and certified by the BOC. She currently serves on the
BOC exam writers committee.
Hopkins and her husband George reside in Tewksbury, Massachusetts
with their son, William.
